Author Q&A with Phoenicia Rogerson – The Bonus Chapter

We love a good origin story. Phoenicia explained that as a child, the only place she ever saw her unusual first name written down was in books on Greek mythology and ancient history. That spark kindled a fascination with the topic, which has resulted in Phoenicia crafting some truly special and well-loved books.
There is plenty of fun in this episode. Phoenicia talks about her deep childhood love for Disney's Hercules, followed by the total sense of betrayal she felt upon discovering the actual myth was completely different to what Disney had told her.
Phoenicia's books push back against traditional portrayals that reduce female characters like Aphrodite to superficial figures. She shines a light on the truth that Aphrodite is, in fact, one of the oldest and most powerful figures in mythology, and is not just there to flirt with Zeus on Mount Olympus. Together with our host, Charli, Phoenicia also explores why modern readers remain so enamoured with Greek mythology.
Phoenicia has a fantastic enthusiasm for mythology, and in this episode she uses her infectious energy to change the perspective on many clichés. Her work goes far beyond the simplified tropes that the genre has traditionally leaned on.
