How to Start (and Stick With) a Reading Routine

We all know that feeling... a towering TBR pile, a calendar full of plans, and somehow, reading slips to the bottom of the list. You promise yourself “just one chapter tonight”, and before you know it, a week (or three) has gone by.
But building a reading routine doesn’t need to feel like another thing on your to-do list. It’s about finding small, joyful moments to escape into a story. Whether that’s five minutes before bed or a cosy Sunday morning with a cuppa - here’s how to make reading a steady (and enjoyable) part of your every day.

Start Small
Forget marathon reading sessions or strict daily goals! The best routines are the ones that fit naturally into your life. Start with ten minutes a day, maybe while you have your morning coffee or wind down in the evening.
Even just a few pages at a time can keep you connected to a story and make it easier to pick up where you left off. Reading is a habit made of moments, not hours.

Make It Social
Reading might feel like a solitary hobby, but sharing the experience can completely change it. Knowing you’ll discuss a book with others is one of the best motivators to keep going.
That’s where Chapter 25 comes in — our book clubs turn reading into connection. You’re not just finishing a book; you’re preparing for laughter, debate, and those “I can’t believe that ending!” conversations.

Find What Works for You
Reading doesn’t have to mean sitting quietly with a hardback. Mix things up! Try audiobooks while cooking or commuting, or e-books for when you’re on the go.
Chapter 25 members get 90 days of BookBeat free — perfect for sneaking in extra chapters during a walk, a drive, or even while doing the washing up! If you prefer e-books, Bookshop.org has just launched titles that are price-matched with Amazon, so you can still support Chapter 25 while filling your e-reader.

Set the Scene
Sometimes, creating the right atmosphere can help you look forward to reading time. Find your cosy corner, pour a drink, light a candle, and leave your phone in another room.
We’ve recently collaborated with Joe’s Tea Co. to bring a little extra comfort to your reading ritual, because nothing pairs with a good book quite like a great cup of tea.
Whether you’re curling up with a soothing brew or sipping something refreshing while you read, a small ritual can make your reading time feel that bit more special.
If you’re joining one of our Virtual Clubs, treat it like a little self-care moment. Your reading ritual doesn’t have to be fancy, just something that feels peaceful and intentional.
Take the Pressure Off
We all hit those times when a book doesn’t click and that’s okay. You don’t have to finish every story you start. Reading should feel like joy, not homework!
Let yourself read what you love, when you love to. It could be a gripping thriller, a slow-burn romance, or a comfort re-read, your routine should be something you look forward to, not something you force.
At Chapter 25, we believe reading should fit into your life, not the other way around. A little consistency, a cosy setting, and a good community can make all the difference.
So, why not make this month the one you finally carve out that little pocket of time just for you? Your next favourite story is waiting and we’d love to read it with you.
Join one of our Chapter 25 book clubs and discover how much easier (and more fun!) it is to stick to your reading goals when you’re surrounded by a community that just gets it.
