Author Q&A with Claire Daverley – The Bonus Chapter

In the latest episode of 'The Bonus Chapter', we are joined by author Claire Daverley, who is best known for her novels Talking at Night and People in Love.

One of the many things we love about these Bonus Chapter episodes is the surprising details that are revealed by the authors we talk to. For instance, did you know that Claire studied fine art at Oxford? Being an author was actually her Plan B, simply because she did not think a writing career was realistic.

In this warm conversation, Claire charts her journey from working in marketing to becoming a full-time author published by Penguin Books. She shares how fine art continues to shape her style, describing her writing process as making 'little word drawings' on the page.

She also speaks candidly about keeping her early writing projects completely under wraps. Fearing that outside noise or market trends might spook her raw ideas, she did not even share works in progress with her husband. Having worked in marketing, Claire knows all too well how industry demands can derail a story, which is precisely why she chose to write mostly in secret.

These tidbits are just the tip of the iceberg in what is a delightfully open and honest chat with one of our favourite authors.
